An 18-story interactive projection representing an optimistic future of plugged-in civic life.

The central commission of San Jose’s new media arts biennial, “Plug-in-Play” took over city hall and public plaza. Participants triggered different inputs, each of which “plugs” into the building and causes a projected firework. The inputs represent different aspects of city life: protest (a megaphone), play (hopscotch), wildlife (a bird feeder), community (a picnic table), traffic (a stop light), and social media (Twitter, Foursquare, and Flickr [it was 2012, OK!]).
